Week 5: Leaning + Listening

  • Examples of sound-based expression (art, design, etc.). This is to get you thinking about sensuous knowledge production.

Sensuous knowledge is a spiritual, combined approach to knowledge

  • Images, texts, memories, materials connected to leaning

During the anti-racist protest in Whitechapel last Saturday that sparked as a response to the far right planning to come to “take the Whitechapel back from the Islamists’ hands”, I took a picture of people standing together for justice and equality. Most participants had their faces covered — a reflection of both the tension surrounding police presence and a collective act of protection. I was drawn to the atmosphere of solidarity and quiet strength, rather than confrontation.

This photograph captures a more literal act of leaning — my friend supporting me during a shoot while I tried to frame a shot. It’s a small but meaningful moment of trust and connection. The gesture reflects how photography often depends on collaboration and care. To lean on someone is to rely, to find balance together, and to create space for shared intention
